Home Hub 2.0B: Swapping to localphone VOIP with Virgin Media

I made the thread name similar to http://www.psidoc.com/showthread.php...R-Virgin-media so that people who search can identify these as similar threads.

I am with Virgin Media and have a spare HH2B. I followed instructions found on the forum to downgrade my HH2B from firmware 4.7.5.1.83.3.31 to 4.7.5.1.83.3.17 and enabled CLI access (thanks PsiDOC!). Now I want to use voip with localphone (gives me very good international rates and an incoming number if I want to).

I can think of two possible ways of achieving what I want:
    1. VM hub working as a modem only, HH2B working as wireless router and ATA for the phone.
    2. VM hub working as the modem/wireless router, HH2B working as ATA for the phone (I saw a lot of people complaining about the wifi of VM hub but I am fine with it).
Devices connected will be laptops, phones and an Xbox360.

Any help (or directions) will be appreciated.

Problem is setting up voip via ethernet port.
What you want to do is easy to achieved. (check some my other posts) apart from voip.. and there you've got a problem to sort out.

Have a look at Using HomeHub 2.0 B for telephony/wireless only.

I will post full instructions on how to convert a DSL model to work as a WAN router and the mods to enable routing and VOIP soon.

Steps I followed do the above

First of all downgraded the Home Hub from firmware 4.7.5.1.83.3.31 to 4.7.5.1.83.3.17 with instruction from Easily & safely downgrade your Hub 2B from 4.7.5.1.83.3.18 so you can unlock it.

Then enabled CLI access with instruction from Unlocking the Home Hub 2.0B With full CLI access.

Then followed the steps in Using HomeHub 2.0 B for telephony/wireless only and configured SIP account with HH2.0B and Voip.

At this point, I was able to dial out, but my phone won't ring for incoming calls, so I enabled it in the web interface as stated here: Hubphones

    I am a happy man

Thanks you PsiDOC, Technodevotee, crabber and mlalnp!

My xbox is still connected to Virgin Hub and I don't intend to use the Home Hub as my main router. But I haven't turned off the wireless on Home Hub so both SSIDs are visible and connectible and I my laptops/phones pick up whichever they like.

Hi, someone flytipped a Homehub 2.0B (DSL version) at my place and I Googled and found this fantastic forum and thought there couldn't be a better way to spend the Easter weekend!! I am trying a similar setup (see diagram. Sorry for the external link) - to use the hub as a VOIP ATA and a file server.

As you can tell, my knowledge of networking is limited. I can follow the rest, but what I can't grasp is whether I really need to convert one of the ports on the BTHH2B to a WAN port for it to function as a VOIP ATA, and why? I followed the tutorials to downgrade to 4.7.xx.3.17, get CLI and then flash to 4.7.xx.3.18. If the hub IP address is set to the broadband modem LAN subnet and SIP port forwarded to it, BTHH firewall disabled (?), routing changes (?). Can it be done, or am I talking BS?

    *** Update ****
After some more trawling, I came across the discussion redirecting SIP traffic when WAN port not in use, where Technodevotee and 8buttons discuss this subject. Hopefully, more information will come out with time.
    ***---***

Not sure what's the easiest way to take a snapshot of the hub config (including changes made through CLI), that will provide an easy restore method, before making changes, if I wanted to revert the WAN port to a regular one in the future.

Would appreciate any guidance to help understand this gem.
